Melbourne is known as the cultural capital of Australia. With a thriving art and music scene, it’s no wonder that Melbourne has welcomed new residents from all walks of life.
Now, we can’t exactly move to Melbourne just yet. This pandemic has left us pretty much paralyzed where we are, literally. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t look ahead and fall in love with the possibility of living in one of the best cities in the world.
So, here are 5 things you need to know about Melbourne:
A Livable City
Based on the 2019 Global Liveability Index, Melbourne ranks as the 2nd Most Livable City in the world! In fact, Melbourne has been sitting on the top spot for seven consecutive years, before Vienna took over. The Global Liveability Index ranks 140 cities around the world based on different important qualities. This includes culture, education, health care, infrastructure and stability.
Sporting Capital of the World
Melbourne hosts some of the most important sport events in the country, even the world. This is where events like the Australian Open, the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix, the AFL Grand Final, the MotoGP and the Spring Racing Carnival are held. It is also home to 5 different sporting venues: the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Docklands Stadium (Etihad), Rod Laver Arena, Hisense Arena and Olympic Park in Melbourne Park.
Diversity
More than 200,000 international students already studying in Melbourne, making it a hub of culture and friendship. Since 1993, Melbourne has also been an essential location for LGBT rights. This is where the first and only LGBT community radio station in The Oz is found. A significant percentage of Melbourne’s population also belongs to immigrants. Residents enjoy a wide array of events and festivals originating from all parts of the globe.
Education
Melbourne is the obvious choice for many students because of the wonderful universities found here. The QS World University Ranking of 2020 ranks the University of Melbourne in it’s 38th spot, beating over 900 universities all over the world. Students flock the city from all over Australia as well as all parts of the globe.
Art and Culture
There are many iconic spots in Melbourne. It is home to the oldest privately-owned theme park in the world, Luna Park. You can also find the largest stained-glass ceiling in the world at the National Gallery of Victoria. The museum also offers plenty of cultural gems for students and art enthusiasts. Beautiful street art liven up spaces everywhere in the capital. Finally, you can celebrate plenty of art festivals and events in Melbourne.
