On a previous post, we shared with you 15 basic words and phrases that fall under Aussie slang. Now, we’re here to drop some more knowledge to keep your vocabulary updated.

Why is it important to understand and use Aussie slang? Well, using slang actually fosters a great spirit of camaraderie between locals and international visitors. Also, it is quite exciting to surprise your friends with expressions they never realized you knew!

So, here are 15 more words and expressions you can add to your arsenal:

Arvo

Aussies love shortcuts. Arvo is just a shorter word for “afternoon!”

Cactus

Got a broken phone? Well, that’s cactus. Got a dead cat? That’s cactus, too.

Crook

If you’re feeling sick, you can tell your workmates that you’re crook.  If you are angry because someone stole your office stapler, you can also tell them you’ve “gone crook.”

Fair dinkum

You use this slang to express approval of something genuinely or truly good, like “These beers are fair dinkum!”

Hard yakka

If you are taking care of your little one during this quarantine, then you are doing “hard yakka.” It simply means  “hard work.”

Legless

Being “legless” is an apt term for being very drunk.

Milk bar

Corner shops and convenience stores in Australia are called “milk bars.”

Mozzie

In Australia, there are 300 different species of mosquito. Perhaps that’s why they’ve come up with a nickname for the creature: Mozzie.

Pressie

Another shortened word, pressie simply means a present. Get your loved ones a nice pressie this quarantine to make them feel your love.

Rapt

If you’re happy and you know it, then you’re rapt!

Ripper

If a friend tells you you’re “ripper,” then you should be rapt! “Ripper” means great!

Stoked

A common term among surfers or those enjoying a breezy lifestyle, “stoked” is another (much cooler) slang for happy.

Ta

Want to say a quick thanks to your local deliveryman? Use the quick slang “Ta!” to show your appreciation.

Thongs

Commonly heard in the summer, “thongs” are another word for flip flops.

Whinge

Been whinging about this quarantine? You are not alone. To whinge means to complain.
