Moving to a new country–temporarily or for life–can bring a lot of stress along with the excitement. In today’s TIPS, Juan Camilo Reyes shares his strategies to avoid negativity, have a positive mindset, and maximise your time when you arrive in a new country.
Moving to Australia or any other country is bound to be an emotional rollercoaster. One minute you’re ecstatic, the next you get a little depressed. It is best to anticipate this low point. These negative feelings will come up–they do for everyone–and will stay for a while, but they can definitely be managed.
It is always best to set your expectations before moving. Know that it will be difficult and the adjustment can take around 6 months to a year. Always remind yourself of how stepping out of your comfort zone is a courageous act that will help you grow.
An unexpected yet important trip is to avoid moving during the winter. Depression occurs for many around this time, and the limited activities and cold weather might trigger your sadness.
Meeting new people is a great way to adjust. Having a supportive social network can do wonders for your mental health. Your new friends can also help remind you how big changes cause different emotions, all of which are valid and temporary. Give yourself a time out from your worries and tell your friends how you feel. You’ll be surprised by how comforting and supportive they could be. If all else fails, there is no shame in seeking professional help.
Those are our top tips for avoiding negativity, having a positive mindset, and maximising your time when you arrive in a new country. Take it easy and take each day as it comes!
