If you’re a student, it can be hard to imagine how you would ever get your first work experience. The competition for any industry is fierce and climbing from the bottom of the ladder can be intimidating. But we all have to start somewhere, right? So, in today’s TIPS, Natasha Munasinghe gives advice on how to get your first work experience as a student.

Be strategic. By this, we mean use whichever channel is open to you. Support events at a local council. Work for non-profit organizations. Get 3 to 6 months of solid work experience with these temp jobs. You earn skills and knowledge, plus you now have valid work experience to add to your resume.

Manage your expectations. To get to the big leagues in Australia, you will need 6 to 12 months of Australian work experience. Given that info, it’s best to get started and just go for smaller firms at first. Don’t get into the more glamorous jobs just yet. Just find a position in the industry you want to work in and you’re set.

Don’t be afraid of rejection.  Apply for all types of jobs that you are interested in. Send in your resume so people in your industry will know you, see your name, and remember you.

When you have been applying for a long time and things aren’t working out, get feedback. Know what didn’t work so that you can do better on your next application. Ask directly and take notes.

Finally, be visible. Utilize LinkedIn as a networking tool. Follow the people who work for your dream companies. Interact with their posts. There is so much value in being active on their feed even before getting hired.

There are so many things you can do to get your first work experience as a student. Let us know how it goes! Good luck!
