Around 200 years have passed since Brisbane was discovered by explorers. Rich in history, the capital of Queensland is a great place for tourists and permanent residents alike. Brisbane is centrally located. This makes it the ideal starting point for people hoping to visit attractions like the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest.
Despite being an important city, Brisbane is not crowded and a stroll around this metropolitan center is enough to make you want to live here. Well, after the quarantine, at least. For now, let’s check out what makes Brisbane so captivating:
Sunshine and Sand
Brisbane is the perfect location for those who wish to bask in the sun all year round. The city has such beautiful weather. In fact, in 2013, the city enjoyed the glory of 283 days of full sunlight! Even during winter, Brisbane barely dips below 20°C. Just imagine all the outdoor activities you can do, all the beaches you can swim in, and all the places you can explore.
Speaking of beaches, there are many sites with beautiful scenery and enjoyable water activities in Brisbane. Point Lookout is the perfect whale watching spot. North Stradbroke offers spectacular vistas unique to Brisbane. Moreton Island is a great place for thrilling activities like snorkelling shipwrecks and hand-feeding dolphins.
Macadamia tree
Brisbane’s City Botanic Gardens has one true that combines history, nature and food. This is where you will find the world’s first cultivated Macadamia tree. It was planted in 1858 by Sir Walter Hill from a seed originating from bushland near Gympie. This amazing tree still produces nuts every year!
Submarines and Ships
Brisbane also took part in a major historical event. After the bombing of Pearl Harbour in December 7, 1941, American submarines and ships who were supposedly headed for Pearl Harbour were redirected to the city instead. It was perfectly situated close to where the troops needed to be while sitting outside the range of Japanese bombers. For a time, Brisbane hosted over 75,000 soldiers.
The Story Bridge
Australia and the city of Brisbane itself has many friendly ties to countries all over the world. One monument to these warm relations is the Story Bridge. The design concept of this bridge has “siblings” in Canada. Its Montreal counterpart is the Jacques Cartier Bridge. The original structure, however, is the one spanning a river in Canada: the Quebec Bridge.
The Story Bridge was completed back in 1940. It is still enjoyed by locals and tourists today as climbing it offers one of the best views in the city. The Story Bridge Adventure Climb is one of the best experiences in Brisbane for visitors.
These are just a few fun facts that make Brisbane a unique site to visit. The city has loads more to offer in terms of food, culture, entertainment and people. We hope sharing a glimpse of this wonderful city will leave you curious enough. Who knows, maybe after this quarantine, you’ll get to experience the beauty of Brisbane firsthand. We really hope you do.
